Statement by Maite Mola, Vice President of the Party of European Left (EL)

Four days before the elections in Ecuador, where the new councilors of the CPCCS (Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control¹) will be elected, and before giving the possibility to the government of Lenin Moreno to fail in obtaining a majority for it, an outrageous decision has been taken by the National Electoral Council to make null votes the majority and thus have reasons to cancel the election.

The decision made decrees that, as each ballot contains three names, if the ballot is cancelled out it is counted as three null votes instead of just one, as it has always been done in multi-person elections.

In this way it multiplies each null vote by three, in a clear attempt to make this the winning option, and avoid the one that was expected against Moreno. The organ would study the accusations against Glas, Correa or the possible corruption cases of the current president and his closest, in addition to reviewing the illegal appointments of authorities made during the last year.

Faced with this unprecedented fact in the history of democracy, the EL wants to show its absolute rejection and we ask the parties that compose it and the national and European institutions to join the democratic Ecuadorian forces in the demand for fair elections that follow the usual international rules of any truly free and transparent election.
