BOLIVIA: STOP FASCIST REPRESSION! FREE ELECTIONS NOW!

Published on: 03.02.2020 News Image

On January 31, the illegal authorities of Bolivia arrested attorney Patricia Hermosa when she was going to register Evo Morales as a candidate in the elections scheduled for next May. His whereabouts are unknown at this time. All personal and legal documents of former President Evo Morales were confiscated, to prevent his electoral candidacy.

Previously they had summoned to declare Luis Alberto Arce Catacora, few hours after his return to Bolivia, to present himself as a presidential candidate. Against him, previously there were no judicial accusations.

At the dawn of February the 1st, at the El Alto airport, César Navarro and Pedro Damiàn Dorado were attacked and arrested, respectively former Minister of Mining and former Vice Minister of Rural Development of the Evo Morales government. Both had received a safe-conduct and were going to Mexico. In the end, they were finally released.

In Mexico’s embassy in La Paz, former Evo Morales Minister Juan Ramón Quintana and other government officials are refugees as their lives are in danger.
With the police and judicial persecution against more than 600 leaders and militants of the Movement to Socialism (MAS) of Evo Morales it is clear that the coup dictatorship does not want to make fair, free and transparent elections, knowing that the MAS would win widely. We denounce and reject this open violation of human rights, supported by the Trump administration.
After the fascist coup d’état and the massacres committed, Bolivia is a country with a self-proclaimed president, religious fundamentalist and racist, increasingly isolated even from minority and para-military groups that promoted her.

The European Left Party strongly rejects the coup dictatorship and demands:

– end of police and judicial persecution of MAS members and social leaders
– the release of all political prisoners and the appearance with life of the desaparecidos
– that the European Union denounces the dictatorship and the performance of its repressive apparatus and gangs of para-military criminals, guilty of crimes against humanity
  – that the EU really work for the return of democracy, demanding the immediate realization of democratic, free and transparent elections.

We call for international solidarity with the Bolivian people and Bolivian democracy.
