The European Left (EL) vigorously condemns the assassination of Jorge Enrique Corredor Gonzales, better known as Wilson Saavedra, former commander of the Colombian FARC-EP guerrillas and participant in peace talks in Havana. The murder occurred on May 14, in the municipality of Tuluà, while Wilson was leaving a restaurant, being attacked by criminals on motorcycles. As a former guerrilla member committed to the reincorporation agreement and the Peace Agreement, Wilson was following some agricultural projects of a cooperative of reinserted people, ECOMUN.
A few hours ago, another former FARC-EP guerrilla member, Maria del Carmen Florez, 37, was murdered in the municipality of Ocaña, near her home.
These crimes are added to the 132 ex-guerrilla members assassinated with impunity since the signing of the Peace Agreements, without there having been concrete results in the search for those responsible and in the dissolution of the paramilitary groups still intact.
A crime that adds to dozens of murders of social leaders carried out by the enemies of Peace.
Enough of murders unpunished!
We demand from the Colombian government and its President Ivan Duque exhaustive investigations, jail for those responsible, respect of the life and physical integrity of the former guerrilla members and social leaders.
We demand from European governments a clear and firm position of rejection of the murders, and of concrete support for Peace.
For its part, the EU has the adequate, appropriate, effective and legitimate instrument to stop the massacres and save Peace: suspend the application of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the EU and Colombia, due to the absence of democratic guarantees.
Otherwise, the EU will be an accomplice of the massacres.
