On the informal meeting of EU Heads of State and Government in Salzburg on 19 and 20 September, the President of the Party of the European Left, Gregor Gysi, declares:
Once again, heads of state and government in the EU have failed a course correction in Europe. The repeated debate on the external borders of the EU and the Commission’s proposal to extend the Frontex border regime to 10,000 forces by 2020 seek to prevent the success of the extreme right in Europe. However, this Commission policy contradicts reality: according to a recent UNHCR report, the total number of people coming to Europe is falling, while on the other hand, the death rate is rising significantly, especially for those crossing the Mediterranean.
It is time for the EU institutions to tackle the really pressing issues and make a social, environmental and democratic change. Only then can it succeed that the extreme right will not win the European elections in the coming year and perhaps take over the commission. One suggestion would be to combine the European elections with a referendum on a European minimum wage. Independently fit composition of the European Parliament, it would be bound by the vote of the European citizens.
