“For the first time, the left-wing Sinn Fein was on par with the two established conservative parties Fine Gael and Fianna Fail. This is no longer a two-party system. A historic result that upended the political system and sends a strong signal of an upcoming change” comments Heinz Bierbaum, the President of the European left Party.
“In the election campaign Sinn Fein set social-political issues in order to differ from the two bourgeois parties. Sinn Fein focused on housing, better health care, pensions and to some extend environment. In the recent years the two major parties Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have failed the people of Ireland in securing good living standards. While Fianna Fail was decimated in 2011 for implementing European Union austerity, Fine Gael, on the other hand, was not able to presiding over a deepening housing crisis, increasing emigration and record levels of homelessness following the economic crisis. Sinn Fein did a great work by winning the trust of those who feel left behind the neoliberal agenda of previous governments.
In addition, Sinn Fein expressed demand for a Border poll over the next five years in their electoral campaign. In the face of Berxit and the new formulated political condition in the UK, I support the demand for a democratic vote over the Irish Unity. As general election exit poll suggests, so are more than half of the people in Ireland.
