The Party of the European Left reasserts its support for and willingness to participate in Bernie Sanders’ call for a Progressive International Front. Yesterday’s election serves as the latest reminder of the need for us to come together to defeat this new authoritarian axis that threatens the world. It also reminds us of the possibility for a progressive democratic response, against exploitation and hate, and for justice and equality for all.

Since being elected as President of Tanzania in 2015, John Pombe Magufuli and his government impede the solving of crimes of which state officials are suspected to be perpetrators or at least involved. Currently, opposition politician Zitto Kabwe is in police custody accused of incitement of the masses.

On the outcome of the presidential election in Brazil, the President of the European Left Gregor Gysi declares:

Before the run-off election on 28/10/2018 for the presidency in Brazil between the candidate of the Workers Party (PT) Fernando Haddad and the right-wing congressman Jair Bolsonaro, there is a possible election influence by massive paid misinformation in the messaging service WhatsApp.

The Vice-Presidency of the Party of the European Left Maite Mola denounces the repressive maneuvers against Jorge Glas, former Vice President of the Republic of Ecuador, transferred to the Detention Center of Latacunga, where violent episodes have recently taken place causing the death of prisoners, alleging supposed reasons of security and risk of flight.

At the General Assembly of the Party of the European Left on 30 September 2018 in Brussels, decisions were made in preparation for the 2019 European elections. The election platform, which was created in a working group, has been declared as a working basis. Amendments and additions may be tabled by the member parties until 16 November 2018. The same applies to proposals on candidates for the European Left on the European elections (President of the European Commission). It was confirmed that there could also be proposals for personalities outside the European Left.

We want to express our will to build fruitful cooperation with the different left forces in Northern America. That is why the Party of European Left, at the occasion of its General Assembly, responds positively to this proposal. We are available for a first exchange of views in order to share analysis and think together how this cooperation could take shape.
