The Latin America Working Group of the Party of the European Left (EL) expresses its solidarity with the Peruvian people and shares its indignation after the pardon accorded by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski to Alberto Fujimori who was serving a 25-year sentence condemning corruption and for his responsibility in crimes against humanity committed during his government. The ex-president, who had to respond to other crimes, also received a presidential grace that exempts him from any new process.
The release of Alberto Fujimori is the result of a political agreement between President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and Keiko Fujimori, daughter of the ex-president and leader of the Popular Power party that has allowed the acting president to escape the dismissal, thanks to the abstention of some right-wing parliamentarians. President Kuczynski made the necessary changes in his cabinet by appointing ministers who would be favorable to a pardon.
Pedro Pablo Kuczynski faces the discredit and the popular anger after the discovery of the bribes that he received from the part of construction companies, among them Odebrecht, that foreseen a series of mega-projects in Peru.
The popular mobilizations that have taken place in Peru are an act of just rebellion against this act of cynicism that leaves unpunished the crimes committed by Alberto Fujimori and in contrast of what is a serious attack against democracy.Stat
