The Party of the European Left is mourning Dimitris Christofias, former President of Cyprus and former Secretary-General of AKEL, the Communist Party of Cyprus.
During his tenure, he has been able as President, that the country recovered quickly from the financial crisis in 2012, which has created significant challenges for the Cypriot people as a result of the interconnectedness of the banks. Above all, he has committed for a peaceful coexistence of the entire Cypriot people.
Christofias was born in 1946 in the still-occupied northern Cypriot district Kyrenia. After a five-year study at the Institute of Social Sciences and a doctorate at the Academy of Social Sciences in Moscow in history, he returned to Cyprus in 1974. He passed away on 21 June in Nicosia at the age of 72 .
As a sign of respect and recognition, Natasa Theodorakopoulou and Willy Meyer attended at the memorial service in Cyprus representing the EL.
For us he will always be a pioneer of Cypriot politics and an icon of the European left. Our deepest sympathy lies with his companions, friends and especially with his family.
