European Left statement on the situation in Catalonia

Beyond the political assessment made of the Proces, one cannot be neutral in the face of the violation of constant rights, the degradation to unthinkable limits of the so-called “rule of law” and the will of the State to employ all repressive means (both police as judicial) to deny Catalonia the right to freely decide its future.

The EL supports the mobilizations of the people in Latin America against the governments of the right-wing and dictatorships of Lenin Moreno in Ecuador and Sebastian Piñera in Chile. Both governments caused tens of deaths, hundreds of wounded and thousands of arrests.

Left Unity on suspension of UK Parliament

Boris Johnson’s suspension of parliament is the latest stage of a right-wing Tory coup that has been unfolding since the Brexit referendum in 2016. The suspension of parliament will presage a calamitous hard Brexit – very likely followed by a general election. Their plan is to turn Britain into a deregulated, cheap labour, low-tax, outpost with minimal workplace and environmental regulations.
To prevent that tragedy, Labour and the unions should call for a million-person march to Westminster to impose the re-opening of parliament. We must respond powerfully to reassert the commitment to democracy and to all our hard won rights.
